Group D comes into a mouth-watering conclusion on Tuesday as Argentina will clash with Nigeria at the Krestovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg.

How to watch Argentina vs Nigeria FIFA world cup Live

This summer’s finals in Russia was meant to be a chance for Argentina to redeem themselves following their runners-up finish in Brazil four years ago, as well as Lionel Messi’s potential World Cup swan song.
Their tournament, however, has been shrouded in misery through a series of poor group and individual performances and Messi missing a crucial spot-kick against Iceland that would have put Argentina in the lead.
Nigeria are second in their group and could qualify should they beat Argentina. The South American side, however, still have a final shot at making it to the last 16 if they are to beat Nigeria, and if Croatia managed to avoid defeat to Iceland.
Here is everything you need to know ahead of the Group D fixture between the two sides.

Four years on from finishing the World Cup in Brazil as runners-up to Germany, this tournament in Russia was supposed to be a chance for Argentina to finally shine and give Messi one last shot at winning the competition. It has all disappointingly not gone according to plan, however, as Argentina face being eliminated in the group stage for the first time since the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan.
Argentina started their group stage campaign on the wrong foot after they scuppered the chance to win 2-1 against Iceland following Messi’s missed penalty. They then went on to lose 3-0 against Croatia , who have emerged as a dark horse in the tournament, and the South Americans have never looked as if they have gelled as a team.
Even Messi has been struggling to make an impact for his side and though they have the likes of Aguero and Dybala available, have struggled to come together as a cohesive unit.
Following Nigeria’s 2-0 win over Iceland, however, Argentina have one final chance of making it to the last 16 should they record a first victory over the Super Eagles and Croatia win their final game against Iceland.
Coach Sampaoli is also in talks to be dismissed following his side’s potential exit, though a last-gasp second-place finish would likely maintain his position as head coach.
The Super Eagles started the tournament as outsiders to impress in Russia after an abysmal 2-0 defeat by Croatia, but wholeheartedly impressed in their fixture against Iceland that they won 2-0. Nigeria are in second place in their group and feature the youngest side of the tournament, and will prove to be a tough opponent for Argentina to break down.
All eyes are on Messi, the player his side are accused of relying on far too often, who has yet to lift a major international honour with Argentina and even score a single goal during this tournament.
